Endo-Canna-What Now?

Six months ago I had no idea what the Endocannabinoid system was. I didn’t have a clue that I had one, nor did I know that it works hard behind the scenes to keep me healthy. I happened upon this information quite by chance when I was scrolling on Facebook. One of my friends was talking about CBD oil and this system that all mammals have in their bodies.

Being the curious person I am, I was intrigued and spent a fair bit of time diving down the rabbit hole of all things CBD and the Endocannabinoid system. And boy did I learn a lot. Let me back up a second, because if you are reading this, you may be wondering what the heck IS the Endocannabinoid system, what does it have to do with CBD oil , and what even is CBD oil for that matter.

Here are the basics of what you need to know. In the late 1980’s a scientist discovered that all mammals have a system that runs all throughout the body (in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, immune cells) called the Endocannabinoid system. The Endocannabinoid system’s sole function is homeostasis; meaning the balancing of all systems and functions. This system helps with processes like sleep, motor control, fertility, pain, pleasure, immune function, temperature regulation, mood, memory, etc. This system has receptors all over the body that need to be fed. It’s food is cannabinoids (the hemp plant and CBD oil specifically). The brain produces these molecules naturally but not enough to feed the system fully.

Fun fact to note is that we used to have an ample supply of cannabinoids from our diet because the livestock we consumed was fed an excellent source of cannabinoids, called hemp. Hemp has been around a long time and used for many things, but once hemp was made illegal (1930’s) and our animals were raised and fed differently, we lost our main source of the cannabinoids needed to help our bodies stay in balance.

That in a nutshell is what this amazingly important system is and what it does for us 24/7. Are you wondering what happens to your health when you are not feeding your Endocannabinoid system daily? A lot actually. Below is a list of health issues that have been studied to have a direct correlation with an unbalanced Endocannabinoid system:

*hormonal imbalances
*joint discomfort
*restless sleep
*mood disorders
*blood sugar imbalances
*digestive issues
*memory issues
*head discomfort
*cardiovascular issues
*kidney, lung, liver issues
*immune system issues
*lymphatic issues
*skin issues
*muscle issues
*nervous conditions

Can you see how important it is to feed the Endocannabinoid system? How do you feed this system you ask?  Read my next blog, Enter Stage Left, CBD Oil” to find out.
